What Causes Hairloss In A Healthy 37 Year Old Woman?

My sister who is 37 has started to suffer from hairloss. She is special needs and is very upset about this. She does not have any bald patches as such but it looks like on one side of her head the hair has been chopped off. (Her hair is to her shoulders)It started a couple of months after she had her hair highlighted for the first time. Can this cause it? She is on the pill, has anyone had this happen to them?

My 2 year old Chihuahua has a lot of hairloss. He has a great appetite and is full of energy, but my vet told me he could have a thyroid problem. Has anyone ever heard of this or anything similar to this?
